I'm in roughly the same situation.  Here is what I've got installed:

ispell-american-3.2.06-205
ispell-british-3.2.06-205
gnome-spell-0.5-1.ximian.4
ispell-3.2.06-205
pspell-12.2-ximian.7
aspell-0.33.7.1-207.ximian.4

I, too, have got the spelling check "On" in Evo, but nothing seems to
happen (I've updated to Evo 1.2.4 recently via Red Carpet).  Do I have
to turn on another "switch" to get it working since I've been unable to
get it working so far?
