Sounds like a font problem--probably your default Gtk font only has a
plain version and no bold variant?

Assuming you're using XD2, go into the Control Center, click Fonts, and
make sure your selected font is one that does have both regular and bold
forms. If you're not using XD2, I'm not sure exactly how you change it,
but it's probably still in the Control Center.
