What do you need?
I *know* that was the issue for a friend of my -- and your symptoms
regarding fonts sound very familiar...
So do you know what he did to solve it? That would be *VERY* helpful to
me!!
Running 'gnome-session-daemon' from the KDE autostart and setting *both*
DPI settings to the same value. That perfectly solved the different font
sizes for him.
But I already posted this information, too.

Is there a way to export the contacts list to an .ldif file? Importing
seems to work just fine.
I am using evolution 1.4.3 on RH8.0.

Odd. Don't look into the sub-folders of preferences, it is in that top
folder.
Does this also fix the problem with fonts being completely messed up?
There was no point on this (as I wrote in another posting: any app
started after the gnome-settings-daemon, regardless of KDE app or Gnome
app, has the fonts completely "replaced" by a single dot per line).
Nope. After I login, I manually run gnome-font-settings. This allows
you to pick fonts for Gnome apps. It never has to be reset (font
selection that is), but I use it now as a quick and easy way to get the
gnome-settings-daemon to start.
Now all I need to figure out is how to stop gnome from hijacking my
mouse movement settings.........
Humm - my mouse was not affected by weird behaviour...
I've modified my mouse speed in KDE the default X setting is WAY too
slow for me. The gnome-settings-daemon sets it back to "default"
values. So, I have to go into KDE system settings and re-apply my
changes. This only happens to me once per login. Luckily, I hardly
ever logout. I suppose I could try to get the gnome mouse settings to
match, then it wouldn't be an issue. In fact, I think I'll go do that
now......

Oh, you'll want to go to apps->gnome_settings_daemon and uncheck
start_screensaver so it doesn't override your KDE settings.

from you again, could not find this.
I told you, you have to check out the DPI value for KDE

That was missing, too - but expected :-) I'm pretty sure KDE uses 75 dpi
(I *ever* used that for years now), and AFAIR X11 is set up such, so it
has to be. I just could not figure out how to tell Gnome2, even not with
gconf-edit...
Running 'gnome-session-daemon' from the KDE autostart and setting *both*
DPI settings to the same value. That perfectly solved the different font

Here the gnome-settings-daemon messes all fonts up completely. But that,
again, may be caused by being confused with different DPI settings.
But I already posted this information, too.
Must have been the same mail as with the location of the DPI settings...
Sorry, but I must have missed it, s.a.
Thank you for your patience...

I just wondered (nope, not using alarm normally):
As these processes have to be running for notifying the user,
shouldn't
they be launched on login?
As they are not running on login, the user will not be notified
unless
he actually runs Evolution -- at least for a short time.
if you start evolution on a GNOME session, when closing the session,
the
list of running programs is saved, so the alarm daemon should be
started
if it was running when the session was ended.
Well, as I said, I am just wondering. I don't use alarms ATM.
Neither did I ever save my session when logging out. I only manually
added gkrellm to the session to start on login. I don't like
automatically recreating all running apps and I even close my apps
before logging out...
I also close all my apps before logging out, but I don't kill the other
processes, so this saves any daemon/component that is running for the
next session.
I don't kill any process either. I just never *saved* a session.
That means, alarm notification will not work as expected before starting
Evolution -- unless the user has actually saved a session with
evolution-alarm-notify running.
This is not mentioned anywhere IMHO -- but it should. Or the alarm
daemon has to be added by Evolution.

You may say "odd" again: but there's no gnome-settings-daemon in apps...
As long as we're still talking about the gconf-edit.

Hm, did you shutdown evolution and kill wombat after doing the change?
The addressbook unfortunately *does* store the path in 1 place, but it
shouldn't be affecting you if you're just clicking on the folder. The
completion list stores the full path iirc, so you'll have to remove the
folders there and re-add them.

There are no more subfolders here. Just nautilus (empty), below that
preferences (just holding the desktop fonts).
Do you have nautilus installed? Maybe it's a version thing, or a
leftover from an older version.
I would never install nautilus as long as I'm not forced to - all my
Linux-life that nautilus only messed up my KDE desktop (that's why my
first look on a messed-up desktop after some Gnome-app-start is "ps
aux|grep nautilus" :-)
Yepp, but all Appz started after that have no fonts anymore...
Real odd. That seems to point to a font server or locale issue. Did
you try choosing different fonts? Changing fonts in gnome-font-settings
has an immediate impact on running gnome apps, so make a font change,
apply it, and see what happens..... go through the font list and see if
any work.
Yes, they all work great - as long as the app was started *prior* to the
gnome-settings-daemon:
1) start Evo. All okay, but fonts too big.
2) start gnome-font-settings and apply font changes. Looks fine in Evo.
3) exit gnome-font-settings. KDE desktop is already gone.
4) start gnome-font-settings again (or some other X-App).
All text is converted into one dot per line, nothing readable.
5) exit all appz, log out, log in.
6) goto 1)
I could also write that as "Loop forever"... The first time called it
works, second call (or: as soon as gnome-settings-daemon was running
once), it's gone...

Yep, it was. Hope, this will solve it for you. Maybe you wanna just
start playing with the Gnome DPI settings until they match.
For a perfect match, make sure Gnome and KDE are even using the same
fonts.

OK. I'm at a loss. After clearing the option to have the desktop
drawn, I've had no problems. You must have some package not installed
correctly. Maybe you need to install nautilus (clear the draw desktop
option and you should be OK). Can't hurt at this point, you can always
un-install it later.
Don't know. I suffered through this (the background issue), until I
found gconf-editor, and have had no problems since.
I wish you luck.
