Subject: [Evolution] getting 1.4.X on RH 7.3, removing gnome breaks hpoj

red-carpet has a few errors lately.

It fails on finding a directory for evo 1.2, and connector 1.2. How do
I tell it to stop looking?

More important is when I try to get evo 1.4 I get:

        gdm 1:2.2.5.4-1.ximian.25 3.08 MB
           depends on: gnome-core
        gnome-core-devel 1:1.4.1-1.ximian.4 3.94 MB
           depends on: gnome-core
        hpoj 0.90-1 1.10 MB
        hpoj-devel 0.90-1 46 KB
           depends on: hpoj
        libglade2-devel 1.99.9-2 312 KB
           conflicts with: libglade2
        libsane-hpoj 0.90-1 136 KB
           depends on: hpoj
        xojpanel 0.90-1 88 KB
           depends on: hpoj

This is a RH 7.3 box. I need hpoj for my printing. Archives/Google do
not show any one else noticing this, and red-carpet does not say why it
is being removed.

It also loads
cups 1:1.1.14-15.4 4.07 MB --
     needed by: libgnomecups

which I do not really want since I run lpr-ng successfully.

libgnomecups 0.1.4-0.ximian.4.2 31 KB --
     needed by: libgnomeprint22

libgnomeprint22 2.3.0.cvs.9-0.ximian.4.2 255 KB --
     needed by: evolution

seems to be where this is coming from.

Also red-carpet seems to be taking up 10 minutes and all the CPU and all
the memory while determining dependicies. Is this due to gnome2? Is it
looping?

Thanks.

what other encoding would you have Evolution send? base64 is the only
encoding that can possibly be used for word docs (since they contain
binary data). You can't send word docs as non-encoded 7bit ascii.

Jeff

I suppose one could uuencode binaries and attach them as text files. :-P

-Mark Gordon

You even could save it as an OpenOffice document, unzip the .sxw file
and attach the plain XML...

Subject: [Evolution] Reading mail in different folders

Hi all,
I came to evo from exmh. Of course evolution is a major step forward,
but there's one thing I miss: the ability to keep reading from folder
to folder without having to explicitly open a new folder. Is there a
setting I'm missing so that I can just keep clicking ] or . to go to the
"next unread" message, regardless of folder?

TIA,

Updating to Evolution 1.4 on Red Hat Linux 7.3 without concurrently
updating to XD2 is not currently recommended. It requires enough
changes to GNOME, for example, that unless one is running KDE to start
with, it's likely to break things. This might get resolved at some
point, but for now, my advice is to either stick with Evolution 1.2.4,
or upgrade to XD2, or upgrade to Red Hat Linux 8.0 (for which the
Evolution-only install is much more feasible).

Red Carpet can take a lot of time trying to resolve especially
complicated dependency situations. It could probably be more efficient,
but I suspect it just took that long to come up with an advised course
of action.

Create a vFolder that will display only "unread" mail in any specified

Now that evolution appears to have the ability to pipe messages to
scripts, I'm thinking of shutting down procmail and letting evolution do
all my filtering. The problem is that I've got a LOT of filter rules
defined in procmail. It looks like I'm in for a lot of mouse clicking.

One of the things that could help would be to edit the filters.xml file
directly. Is it safe to do this, or would it screw up evolution?

1. Submit a bug for Evolution... It may already exist? 2. You can always
change the code... easier said than done!

On Fri, 2003-06-06 at 06:44, Rick Friedman wrote:
Is it possible to get Evolution to retain the size of email windows from

After starting up Evolution, when I select an email to read, the window
that opens (containing the message text) is a bit too small for my
taste. So, I resize the window to make it a bit larger. For the rest of
that session, the window size is then fine for all the mail that I open.

However, after I shut down Evolution, when I start it up again, I find
that the email window size has reverted to the smaller size. I am unable
to find some way to get Evolution to retain the window size that I set.
Is it possible?

BTW, I'm running Evolution 1.3.92 on SuSE 8.2.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi, I'm using Evolution 1.4.0 and am a bit disappointed. I recently
switched over from MS Outlook, so I have little to complain about, but
the mail reading is much less smooth. I don't use the preview pane, so
I double-click on the first new message. Then, in Outlook, whatever I
do to that message--whether delete it or move it somewhere--the next
message automatically opens in that window. There are also Next and
Prev buttons. Evolution doesn't have any of that; the mail window you
open is for that message only, making reading multiple messages much
more difficult.

Any option to change that, or plans for implementing that in the future?

Also, why is it so bloody impossible to copy and paste from within said
message windows?!

Thanks,
Andrew

I have filed a bug #44476 regarding the inability to read the next
message smoothly after deleting the first message. The response was
that this was not a bug. The ability to smoothly read multiple messages
may be re-integrated into a future version of evolution, such as 1.6.

The suggested workaround from ximian was to use the preview screen to
read messages. My workaround is to use evolution 1.2.4 and ignore 1.4.
Or perhaps you could write a bug report that will get an earlier
response from ximian.

Earlier today guenther suggested to me that I set up a virtual folder

remember to cull the spam from my inbox. (Everything else gets sorted

might still work on 1.4. Have you tried this approach?

In case of evolution 1.4.0, I found an interesting thing.
I created a vfolder "unread" with condition "status"+"is not"+"read".
Well, it works -- gether all the unread messages.
But after I read them, they're still there. If I restart evolution, the
"unread" vfolder will be empty. That's what I want.

Suppose a message should be removed after reading it. Make sense?

Is it a bug or feature?

Calvin

Is anyone else using Evolution 1.4 with connector and a palm PDA?

I'm finding that the evolution conduits are causing massive duplication
of any touched item in a way that does not happen against standard evo
contacts/calendar/todo list.

In particular any item deleted from either palm or exchange does not get
deleted from the other side on sync, and if an appointment (for example)
is modified on either side you end up with both the original and
modified version after sync.
