Is this IMAP? Or are you using POP, or loading the emails right from an
mbox or Maildir?
Might you have another process running (on your computer or maybe
elsewhere, at work, say) that's accessing the same store?
Other than that I'm not familiar enough with Evo's internals to know
what the problem could be.
