you need to set the gnome 1 http proxy settings using the gnome control
centre.

search the archives of this list for details on this and doing it
manually if BrokenHat hasn't included the required tools, it's been
mentioned here a lot, and probably also in the ximian support site @
http://support.ximian.com/ - search the knowledgebase.
