Bizarreness. Applying the whole patch in the office didn't help, as I
said -- however, just removing the offending g_free() here at home did
fix the composer though. 

I _had_ double-checked I was really running the right code; I'll do so
again in the morning, and try applying the whole patch to today's CVS
here to see if that makes it regress.

It doesn't fix the strange font in display of messages though.
