As far as I know, they shouldn't be.

That might not work so well -- I think the current plan is to convert
old settings automatically, so the ~/evolution from 1.2 or 1.0 will be
turned into something that the current version can use. It implies that
old-format files will be moved, marked as "already converted" or simply
deleted after conversion.

In any case, you should keep a backup, at least when testing unstable
code.
