[Evolution] how to use evolution thru a firewall?

My ISP runs a firewall and my mail servers (POP and SMTP) are beyond. 
Can I use Evolution in this situation? ISP advices using Hummingbird 
SOCKS client for windows users. No help for Linux which I am trying to use.
