this is actually not a true statement. it's not even up to Evolution to
preserve or not preserve IMAP folder subscriptions, that's the server's
responsibility. The reason people are having problems is because they
never subscribed to INBOX in the first place.

Uh, I smell BS.

I don't - because I'm not BSing, I'm giving you the facts.

You mean to tell me that *every* other IMAP client in the world that never
required me to subscribe to my INBOX is broken??

When I posted to this list the other day and showed the output of LSUB ""
"*", my INBOX was in the list yet Evolution could not see it. Every other
IMAP client I've ever used (and I've tried a lot of them) could always see
it.

where's the log? did it say something along the lines of:

* LSUB (\NoSelect) "." INBOX

See that \NoSelect? yea... that means the folder is not selectable. Of
course, since INBOX is always supposed to be selectable, what the server
is actually trying to convey is that it is unsubscribed (best I can
tell, since as soon as I subscribe to my INBOX that \NoSelect goes
away).

If I was the only person to have the issue, I'd chalk it up to a mistake
on my part, but since so many people had the problem how can you honestly
imply it's a misconfiguration on the user's part??

See it how you will, but the reason people are getting the "INBOX cannot
contain messages" warning is because they aren't subscribed to INBOX -
and I can personally guarantee that Evolution is not unsubscribing the
user, therefor - yes, it's a user misconfiguration issue.

As additional proof, someone on IRC has just noted that his Mail.App
IMAP client (for Mac OS X?) has a similar problem when the INBOX is not
subscribed.
