this is precisely the reason the feature was removed in the first place.
It cannot be fixed.
In that case, it seems to me a lot happier solution for everyone would
have been to disable the buttons if reading in threaded mode. Or is
communication between different parts of Evolution so poor that the
message window wouldn't know if you're in threaded mode or not?
it's not just threading, it's other sorts as well. The message-browser
window has to create a new message-list widget to use and because of
that, it doesn't inherit the sorting and/or threading that the main
window may have.
You are welcome to come up with a working solution...
