I just received a Visor pda and have not been able to sync it with

enable syncing with evolution?
I've found the USB sync to need a kick most of the time. I start the
pilot/visor-tool (Redhat 8, palm control-panel on Ximian I think),
before syncing. This wakes up gpiotld.
The pilot conduits weren't configurable in RedHat 8 or when I had
Ximian's Control-Center installed. I had to configure the evo conduits
by editing the files.
gnome-pilot uses pilot link to do the work. Can you do a backup using
the command line?
