[Evolution] virtual consoles are all left in a wierd state

I have had another reoccurence of a very anoying problem - after an X
crash, it restarts ok, but my virtual consoles are all left in a wierd
state.  I get a combination of part graphical screen (like a background)
on the bottom half, and two working copies of the original console
occupying the each of the top quarters.  In the past, a reboot has been
the the only fix that seems to work, but there must be a better way!

Any ideas please?

Note this is not limited to the video card, or even the same system, but
I have never seen it on RH, but on Mandrake only, for 7.1 on.
