I've found that KDE's Klipper applet is a big help with this: it has an
"history" so you can go back to previous selected text, even if you've
made more selections in the meantime.

Or, you can use the standard xclipboard that comes with the XFree86-tools 
package.  No frills, no extra weight from being a "desktop-centric" app.  
Just a nice, simple place to hold all of your selections.
