Yes, I wonder if the the iso-8859-1 character set should not be
considered deprecated. Is there anyone out there who knows what the
"legal status", so to speak, of this character set is?


Hmmm. Good question. This page
http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/latin9.html explains which chars are
different between iso-8859-1 and -15. I've already seen some slight
problems with applications (e.g. Sawfish in some help texts) that use
the acute accent instead of the apostrophe (now I get the capital Z with
caron, instead of something resembling an apostrophe). However, it is
those apps which are broken.
