Hmm, I received the character as a ? (question mark).

However, it sounds (and looks according to your headers) as if you're
using iso-8859-1.  iso-8859-1 doesn't have a €, but just has the
international currency symbol, which is on the same place (bytewise) as
the €.

So, if you switch to iso-8859-15, you should get the €.
