This is just an oustanding known issue.

No the ui is correct.  Hide read messages is not a state, its an action.

i.e. it just hides CURRENTLY read messages.  It doesn't keep hiding
newly read messages.

The action is accumulative.  i.e. if you hide read messages then hide
deleted messages it wont unhide those that were hidden before.
