I have the same issue; it's bad enough in fact that I downgraded back to 0.9 as I was unable to receive mail. 
 It would just stay on "updating" until I gave up or evolution crashed altogether.

Presario 1600 Laptop, Mandrake8, 182Mb RAM, Celery500.
