Ok, I found libiconv-1.6.1--which I did not have installed.  So, I 
uninstalled libunicode (both from suse and gnome), also uninstalled 
liconv.  Then built libiconv, then rebuilt libunicode.  Finally, I tried 
building Gal-0.5 again....same problem as before.

So, I uninstalled libunicode, libiconv, then rebuilt libunicode (from 
gnome only, not suse), then rebuilt libiconv, the reinstalled liconv 
(i've got it as an rpm).  Between each step I ran SuSEconfig.  Still 
same error I had before, which I've pasted below.

Now what?
