Extra, extra, read all about it. The tech world has gone "X"
crazy. What am I talking about? The sudden ubiquity of the 24th
letter of the alphabet. The current X craze arguably dates back
to Douglas Coupland's 1992 novel "Generation X," which was
followed shortly thereafter by the otherworldly "X-Files." Then
"extreme" entered the popular lexicon as a description for
unconventional sports, spawning the X Games, the XFL, and even
the Xbox, a hotly anticipated gaming console.

Now, though, X is staking its claim on mainstream software. Last
week, Microsoft released final code of the latest version of
Office, dubbed Office XP. Then Apple followed up with Mac OS X
(generally pronounced "OS 10," but an X is an X, after all). And
of course Microsoft has already announced that Windows XP
(successor to Windows 2000), is due by year's end.
