Yeah, I think that's what we want to do: have all vfolder changes be
reflected immediately, but tweak things so that the currently-selected
message can't be removed from the message-list until you select
another one.

That would be my preference. When you enter a vfolder, it has the
correct, up to date, contents and as you read or change the status of
messages the contents of the vfolder update appropriately. Also, as new
messages are retrieved, they may enter the vfolder as required the the
filter rules (just like they might enter an inbox) while you are in it.
But the currently selected message doesn't disappear until it is
unselected or the vfolder is exited.

(Although, we don't want it to work that way when you expunge, so it
can't be quite that simple...)

Yes, the current expunge behavior is a little unusual I think: the
message disappears from the message list but the content of the message
still hangs around in the reading window. You could use the same
behavior in vfolders, in which case the currently selected message could
still be read even if it disappeared from the vfolder contents list.
However, I find this behavior surprising and I think it would be better,
both for vfolder filter rules and expunge, if the contents of a message
disappear whenever the message is removed from the message list of the
folder. I don't really think that having a message content displayed
without a corresponding message header selected in the message list
window is intuitive behavior. Similarly, if you have a message selected
and you select "Hide Selected Messages" then shouldn't the contents of
that message also disappear?
