[Evolution] presence of ~/Mail

I noticed a strange thing:

When I start evolution I get .$MBOX.index-files in my
~/Mail-directory. What is that good for when none of
the mbox-style folders residing there show up in
evolution? Evolution stores its mail in
~evolution/local, doesn't it? So evolution should leave
~/Mail alone... Or is it accessible bot not done or
visible yet? Or am I blind?

Besides: is there a way to access whole folders of
mbox-files?
