[Evolution] Can't use contacts

Maybe someone knows how to fix this . . . 

The Contacts feature isn't working on my machine. I've got version
0.12.99 [+CVS.2001.08.20.07.08] installed on my RH 7.0 box. When I try
to save an address to Contacts, I get the "Querying addressbook" box,
but it just stays open. In the Contacts view, nothing appears. However,
there IS a file in ~/evolution/local/Contacts called addressbook.db,
which does have (besides some binary stuff) some ascii data from vcards.
Anyway, I'm baffled -- any ideas on what to do to get Evolution to
properly save and display an addressbook?
