How is evolution going to support IMAP if all messages are in one
file?


These are entirely different things. This discussion has been about
the local storage of mail. If you're using IMAP, then it doesn't
matter what Evolution would do on local disk, because you mail won't
be stored on local disk, it will be stored on the IMAP server.

Can't vfolders search across multiple mbox files?


Yes, they can. (Or rather, "will be able to".)

IMAP4 is defined in RFC-1730.


Actually, that's out of date. The current version of the spec is RFC
2060.
