Another point for the consolidated file is this: if we leave everything in a
directory, third party-apps may be written to directly edit those files. If
Evolution/Wombat is upgraded, the directory structure may change, and those
third-party apps will fail (remember, Evolution is intended to be a platform
for other applications).
OTOH, if we use a consolidated file, people are more likely to use our api
for changing things, which means we can keep backward-compatibility. It's
easier to ensure that programmers view/change the settings from the right
level of abstraction. It's not the main reason I like consolidating
everything, but it's a point to consider.
