A single file also means that one byte of corruption can bring down the
whole house of cards instead of just part of it.

Far more important than whether it's one file or N is whether it
contains fully-qualified pathnames.  I spent hours trying to figure out
why, when I copied my .gnome/ and .enlightenment/ directories from one
machine to another, nothing worked -- it turns out that the reason was
that on one machine my home directory was /home/jwz/ and on the other it
was /u/jwz/.  Just about every file had fully-qualified pathnames in
them, so nothing worked.
