I really think you're missing the high order bit here.

It doesn't matter that it's not reliable.

It doesn't matter that it's not pretty.

It doesn't matter that the POP3 protocol is a crockish piece of shit.

You have to do it anyway.  It's just that simple.

If you don't, the users won't use your software.  
Acknowlege, and move on.
