you'd have to download the entire message again (because you can't start
where you left off), this begins to get overly complicated because what if
the user has it set to delete messages off the pop server after they
download? then what?
you can't just go get the rest of the message...because it isn't there
argh!

You don't have it on as default
you have have it as a preferences option
and when a message is truncated it has a spiffy bit at the end saying
"your message was truncated as per your preference settings, CLICK HERE
to download the rest of your message"

No...
I can picture it now...
"Why is my message truncated!?! Bug in Evolution!!!"
this wouldn't be a good thing :)

surely a truncation feature is sufficient??
i run at home on a 28kbps line...
i use netscape mail at the moment (waiting for another linux client
with
truncation)
setting it to truncate any message over 10kb i get all my mail quickly
down my slow conenction and can choose to get the ones with large
attachments at my leisure.
10kb is still quite a lot of plain text (which is still what the
majority
of mail is)

Actually, it would be better if the servers themselves recognized
a common compression protocol for attachments, and would pack them
all
together in one shot, bring down mail, then send you the equivalent
of
a
'package' (like rpm/deb) for your attachments. When that 'package'
reaches
your system, the attachments are 'unpacked' and linked to the right
messages.
That sounds a nightmare to implement.
