Yes, it appears that my problem is the same. I can "solve" the issue by using dvipdf instead of dvips followed by ps2pdf. Looking at the generated pdf files they are quite different. And, like the above thread notes, it seems to be related to rotation (landscape vrs. portrait). I'll let the experts in the gnome group figure it all out :)
