Works for me (even cut+paste) here on Debian sid for amd64 and the
following packages installed:
xpdf-chinese-simplified 20040727-1 [install ok installed]
xpdf-common 3.02-1.4 [install ok installed]
xpdf-japanese 1:20040727-1 [install ok installed]
xpdf-reader 3.02-1.4 [install ok installed]
libcairo2 1.8.4-1 [install ok installed]
libpoppler-glib3 0.8.7-1 [install ok installed]
libpoppler3 0.8.7-1 [install ok installed]
poppler-data 0.2.1-1 [install ok installed]
poppler-utils 0.8.7-1 [install ok installed]
evince 2.24.1-1 [install ok installed]
ttf-kochi-gothic 1.0.20030809-8 [install ok installed]
ttf-kochi-mincho 1.0.20030809-8 [install ok installed]
ttf-sazanami-gothic 20040629-2 [install ok installed]
ttf-sazanami-mincho 20040629-2 [install ok installed]
AFAIK xpdf-japanese shouldn't be needed for poppler-based rendering
if you have poppler-data installed.
Cheers, Roderich
