I've tried a straight backport of evince 0.8.1-1 from experimental to
etch, it needed only two more packages, namely poppler and
gnome-icon-theme.

You fine the package at

deb http://apt.64studio.com/backports etch main

if it solves the problem we could include it, and maybe update
everything once Debian's evince migrates to unstable/testing along
with poppler.
