Re: Press release for 2.20?

Hi all,

Guys, I'm getting worried: the 2.20 release is tomorrow and we haven't
decided about the splash yet. There's no time for any discussion
anymore.

I guess the 2.20 splash could be "generic": some good-looking image
with "GNOME 2.20 is out!".

Andreas, what do you think?

Let's go with Quim's idea putting improvements in universal access to
the forefront.

Ok, if there isn't anyone strongly against it...

Andreas, I think it would be a good time to start working on the w.g.o
frontpage splash screen. :-)

Totally. Glad we came to a conclusion!

We don't yet know what languages are new in GNOME 2.20. We will know
later today. So I think it's a bit early to mention internationalization
as a theme of 2.20, assuming that's what you partly mean that with "open
access". Please be patient for just a few more hours.

As far as I can tell, no new languages will be supported (80%
translated) in GNOME 2.20, and we may actually have less supported
languages than before (54 in GNOME 2.16, 50 in 2.20, unknown in 2.18).
We can't claim that N'Ko languages are supported (because there are no
translations that actually use that pango shaper), and I don't wish to
make a big deal of the purely under-the-hood part of N'Ko support that
does now exist. So I don't think that we should use improved
internationalization as a major new them. I have mentioned the RTL
support, because that's real and cool.

It's string freeze now, so this discussion is done, though there's still
some freedom for the splash and for a press release if someone chooses
to do one. This is the introductory paragraph now in the release notes:
"
The improvements in GNOME &gnomeversion; include: Improved support for
right-to-left languages; desktop search integrated into the file chooser
dialog; convenient new features in the Evolution email and calendar
client; enhanced browsing of image collections; simplified system
preferences; efficient power management and incredibly accurate laptop
battery monitoring. Developers receive more help with application
development thanks to a new version of the GTK+ toolkit, improved tools,
and a great new documentation web site.
