Is there any idea for when the 4.x version be available in the debian
repositories ?

Ekiga 4.0 IS available in debian, in experimental, cf.
http://packages.qa.debian.org/e/ekiga.html.

It is very simple to install it, you need to add experimental suite to
/etc/apt/sources.list.

My understanding is that the experimental version of Debian, is
dangerous, and so is named "sid", as the character in Toy Story, who
liked to break things.

Brent, debian is trying to do a new release, hence all new packets go to experimental in the meantime. Using experimental is otherwise dangerous if you use many packets from it, but if you take one packet from time to time, the danger is limited to that packet only.

As ekiga 4.0 is much better than 3.2.7, there is no danger to install ekiga 4.0 from experimental.

I have just visited the Debian web site, to try to find the relevant
information, and warnings regarding the experimental stuff associated
with Debian, but the Debian web site appears to have been breached and
compromised.

What about package dependencies?

Some years ago, my wife, who is a software developer, wanted to investigate the prospect of working with mono. To instal mono, dependencies had to be satisfied, that involed the testing version of Debian. That meant that we had to have a hybrid system of stable and testing versions of Debian, to satisfy the dependencies for mono.

The hybrid system of Debian stable and testing, destabilised our installation of Debian, and ended up causing more trouble than it was worth.

So, the issue of package dependencies, when a package is applicable to a version of Debian, other than the stable version, is a critical issue.
