It is possible yo use linphone but it is not so user friendly and it
doesn't supports all codecs. It works also on android smartphones (I
work on IM for android version with my students).
I prefer Ekiga for ldap integration, codecs and GUI. To use Ekiga,
IM and asterisk the (bad) solution is modifying asterisk chan_sip.c
to avoid controls. It is an "acceptable" solution for a research
projects but the right way is modifying ekiga IM ID management.

Another point : I use IM with SIP and asterisk for remote
control purposes. Ekiga has a trouble with identity (I
didn't make tests since months, but...). Ekiga uses <OS
login>@<IP or hostname> as ID and not <SIP
ID>@registrar. I have written some posts on this point

It means that Asterisk does not support chat, only voice calls.
