Good ideas coming in thick and fast! most seem to involve Ekiga 3.00 and
the H.264 codec As I suspected, 256k, If we can use it effectively,
should be able to generate usable video - the trick is how best to use
the bandwidth.
The question is now - How do we try this out? (assuming Ekiga 3.00 is
not available in alpha or beta), do I just wait? or is there something
else I can try short term? Programs such as Theora are mentioned but
even after having read their website, I'm not sure how we implement this
into a video calling setup - perhaps too many brain cells have abandoned
ship - I'll need a little guidance.
I would willing offer my assistance but my coding skills belong to
another era ( mainly mathematical Fortran programming) although I still
dabble with a little C, I suspect I would be more of a hindrance than a
help. However alpha or beta testing; that's another matter, I don't mind
purchasing another webcam or two in a good cause and I'm slowly getting
the hang of this Linux. (I used to be a systems administrator on a SCO
Unix box back in the Eighties - it's amazing what you forget).
Many thanks for your help so far, I am hopeful that we will achieve the
desired goal. The difference that high quality video calling can make to
the hearing impaired can't be overstated - it means independence in many
everyday tasks that most of us take for granted.
