Yuck. In this case, I think that targeting the LTS release is fine, as it is not certain that 2.2.0 will find its way into even 14.04. I should be able to have a PPA available, and there might be an SRU to get 2.2.0 into the LTS. Debian stable still has version 1.7.2 of TagLib, which I am guessing is old enough to be missing further support.
While it would be nice to keep working on Debian stable, I do not know how feasible that is.
