is this an option for you? because having a lot of mp3s the probability of
having one, where id3lib chokes is high. (i've got some, where all tools using
id3lib like id3v2 and easytag just hang.) but the organizing tool i use (madman)
which is using taglib, handels them just fine.
taglib is c++, but has a C bindings for the generic api. (it also supports lot
of different tags, in a unified interface (ogg, flac, ape etc)

bindings.
