Er, no it's not. I tried changing directory to my ~/diagrams
directory and running dia from the command line there. Dia still
defaulted to my home directory, *not* ~/diagrams.

Under Windows this can be changed via the startup file

Yes, but if you go to open files in the 'tools' window it's back at
the root/home directory. It's only if you open a file in the window
where a file is already open that you get the same directory.

 - if you want a single or multiple other default folders you can
store tham as bookmarks within the file open/save/export dialog and
changing to them is just one click away

How do you do that? I thought it must be possible but I couldn't work
out how to do it. It would be an acceptable solution for me.
