You're most welcome to base your developments on Dia, as long as you use
the GPL as license for your code. Besides looking at the architecture
documents and Dia's general structure, you may want to look at the
existing plugins and objects. In case your graphs are updated on a
regular basis from the outside, the
clock object might be of special interest for you:
