There's no need to compile anything. You just need Python 2.3.
There are step-by-step instructions how to install it on

Don't be afraid because the document contains some sections that are
only relevant to developers.
Just watch out for the "If you're not a developer, skip this" notes.

Perhaps the document should be split into two different versions, one
for developers and one for users.
