The only possible way would be to embed the image in the file format (á la Open Office - try changing an odt file into a zip file and opening it - odts are just zip files containing XML and images). However, that would require a re-write of the file handling mechanisms, so I hope Ian's suggestion would work.

If you put the image in your local directory and then insert it as just file.jpeg, say, without any path, then the image filename in the .dia file also gets stored without any path, and should be usable cross-platform.
I don't know any other way of making embedded images in Dia portable between machines, let alone between OSes.

Since I would like the diagram to be correct on both a windows and a linux system, I obviously get into problems with the path then. So, is there a way that I can embed the image? Alternatively, it might work if it was possible to specify alternative paths to the inserted image. Then if the first path doesn't work, the second path will be used. Should I file any of the above in bugzilla? cheers /Christian
