Getting them the same would be great...

They are a lot influenced by the screen resolution and the font
renderer's idea of the rendered width of a given string. There is little
we can do here.

Why do bounding boxes get saved at all? To me it looks like they should
be computed after loading the file.

It's not a question of saving the bounding boxes.  The problem is that the
size of the text determines the size of the surrounding box.  If the text
doesn't scale linearly, the size of the box is indeterminate.
