I've done some initial work on solving this in gtk+:

However, I don't think that is the right level, and I want to take a
look at solving it properly in the lower levels (X/Wayland/Compositor).
I hope to get to look at this soon.

Thats very nice of you! I don't need it, but perhaps once this work
starts happening you can use it to help out, or lend it to someone else
helping out with it.
