Does anything like that exist and if so is it documented, translated,
accessible and well tested? The devil is in the details and huge amounts
of time and effort has been invested in the details of Gedit. There may
be good excuse to sneak other text editors into Gnome (like maybe tomboy,
or the sticky notes applet, or (*) ...) but justifying the removal of
Gedit is a whole other ball of wax.

The gedit developers can tell you I'm not even very enthusiastic about
gedit but vague comments about unproven alternatives are counter
productive.

* I'd love to find an excuse for Gnome to include a very minimal text
editor, perhaps even share one with GPE/Maemo or even XFCE.
