What you say was true about the old core X fonts backend for Pango (it
cached some metrics info as a property on the root window), but I don't
think it is true for the Xft/fontconfig backend. Since the core X fonts
backend doesn't exist in recent versions of Pango, it shouldn't be an
issue here.
