this is a fairly specific implementation detail.

i try not to tell developers how exactly they should implement things

a way to specify default folders would be necessary at some stage but we
should decide where to add such a user inteface later, intially a gconf
key should be enough to make absolutely sure this concept really works
well.  if it does work well configuration options might not be necessary
for the normal user.
