Also bear in mind that Grandma will on occasion need to administer her
own system. 

Would you rather she made use of the distro's propriety and often crude
and crappy tools or the easy to use HIG compliant GSTools?

What if Grandma wants to try out another distro - should she have to
re-learn different propriety system tools each time? 

IMHO, if Gnome wants to be the best free desktop environment around then
it has to address these issues. (its also an opportunity to reverse the
fragmentation between linux distros in this area).
