Linux is much more in the news, is receiving prime time advertising, and is moving from the very obscure to the very known.
Gnome is becoming professional enough and stable enough to be a viable desktop for the non-technical (I do not know what, if any, desktop IBM advocates).
All of this is raising visiblity. Gnome and Linux is being known, watched, and considered by large potential users.

The release coordinator is the editor who writes and proof-reads the GNOME D&DP announcements.
