My personal druthers would be to attach metadata to files by extended
attributes if possible-- and only use the metafiles in the case of a
filesystem that doesn't support EAs on its own (NFS home, CD-ROMs, etc).
A Dbus-based fam implementation sounds like a very interesting idea,
though.
