I think it was Jimmac who once mentioned to me that the HIG palette is 
generally used as a guideline only. I believe he mentioned that most of 
the fs icons and stock icons are variations on the HIG palette, usually 
just slightly brighter or slightly darker.

I think what I'm trying to say is that gradients are fine, since they 
are comparable to shading in the default theme's icons. Whether a colour 
is lighter or darker, it's okay as long as the base colour is from the 
palette.
